All summer, I have slowly been working on some choreography, which I have tested on my Tuesday night crew..meaning Kylie. I used “Goodnight and Go” by Imogen Heap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9athUdhH40 . This dance was basically put together for the night jazz classes and quickly became a favorite. I’ve used lots of choreography from the summer camps, ideas and inspiration that the girls have given me, and fun movement that was found in the Krakower’s basement.
My idea behind this choreography: From day 1, the character/dancer needed to find the opposites in life. I asked the girls to feel free with the movement one moment, and then have a sudden change to become restricted and jagged. The next week, our definitions of movement changed to being pretty one second, and ugly or dead the next. Having these words to think about while dancing gave them the idea and image to place in their head when moving. It made the meaning of the dance (having something taken away, with no control) both apparent to an audience and dancer. Later, I asked the dancers to feel even more restricted, when their friends, who have been moving with them all along take “whats theirs” away again. Through the choreography, the girls have learned to go past their comfort zone, while also controlling the movement and dancing it. Its really a balancing act of understanding what needs to be presented and performed, while also presenting yourself, through the lyrics and choreography.
This dance will be performed at a talent show on September 6th in Waterbury.
