goodnight and go

August.28.2009

All summer, I have slowly been working on some choreography, which I have tested on my Tuesday night crew..meaning Kylie. I used “Goodnight and Go” by Imogen Heap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9athUdhH40 . This dance was basically put together for the night jazz classes and quickly became a favorite. I’ve used lots of choreography from the summer camps, ideas and inspiration that the girls have given me, and fun movement that was found in the Krakower’s basement.

My idea behind this choreography: From day 1, the character/dancer needed to find the opposites in life. I asked the girls to feel free with the movement one moment, and then have a sudden change to become restricted and jagged. The next week, our definitions of movement changed to being pretty one second, and ugly or dead the next. Having these words to think about while dancing gave them the idea and image to place in their head when moving. It made the meaning of the dance (having something taken away, with no control) both apparent to an audience and dancer. Later, I asked the dancers to feel even more restricted, when their friends, who have been moving with them all along take “whats theirs” away again. Through the choreography, the girls have learned to go past their comfort zone, while also controlling the movement and dancing it. Its really a balancing act of understanding what needs to be presented and performed, while also presenting yourself, through the lyrics and choreography.

This dance will be performed at a talent show on September 6th in Waterbury.

Last Jazz Class

August.28.2009

My work for Summer ‘09 is done. Well, almost.....TRIP auditions are this Sunday (see http://www.stowedance.com/index.php/news/).

Anyways...on Tuesday I had a very large Jazz class and it was great. I guess I had too much coffee that afternoon and went a little crazy (but it was fun). We took lots of pictures of the girls leaps across the floor, and here are just a few.

backstage action

August.26.2009

Our wonderful friends at Propix (cough cough..Jonathan) shot some great photos from behind the scenes. Not only do we get to chill with our three Propix buddies once a year, but they have become a part of the SDA family. Jonathan was backstage quite a big, catching some unforgettable 2009 moments of SDA performers and backstage crew. Here they are…

summers over…back to the studio

August 23, 2009

I know you are all soo bummed that Summer is coming to an end, but soon you will be back at SDA. Vermont did not experience a HOT summer as we would have wished for, but we have certainly had a few great weeks. I hope that all SDA students had a fun summer and relaxed a bit. We have seen a lots of our students here at the studio for camps, and many of our dancers have been to ballet intensives around the East coast.

Night classes to get ready for the semester begin tomorrow (Monday August 24th). There is ballet on Monday and Thursday nights, Jazz on Tuesday and Point on Thursday. Info on these classes can be found at http://stowedance.com/index.php/schedule/

Happy last week of summer!!

Weekend in NYC.

At 6:30 AM this past Saturday, the Mallon’s Suburban, along with Deb, Marsha, Caroline, Jordan, Cara, Helena and I left Stowe for the big, bad and exciting NYC. We took the ferry across a sunny and beautiful Lake Champlain and made it to NYC right in time to take Tracie Stanfield’s 1:30 Leaps and Turns class. This was Jordan, Caroline and Cara’s first time to Broadway Dance Center and we had a great time. After Tracie’s awesome class, we took Jazz/Funk from Chio. Our travel agent ‘Helena’ got us a hotel right down town. We saw ‘Hair the Musical’ omg omg omg...so good....(which should not been seen under age 13, BUT I LOVED) and took the girls to a fun NYC late dinner on 9th Ave.

Our Sunday consisted of coffee, the NYC Marathon, Ballet and Jazz classes at STEPS...and...’The Lion King.’ It was such an amazing show. The props and costumes were very elaborate and beautiful. We had a great time shopping at Forever 21, eating in China town and getting some tasty dessert in Little Italy. Jordan and Caroline indulged in chocolate covered strawberry’s while the rest of us ate gelato.

All in all, we had a great weekend. Monday was filled with MORE classes...some of the favorites. Cara and I took a Michelle Assaf jazz class while the girls took ballet. I took Brice Mousset contemporary class and contemporary with Calen. Cara took Tracie again (her favorite) while the girls went out on the town for some last minute shopping.

Broadway Dance Center on 45th and 8th is a great studio in NYC with tons of Jazz/Hip Hop/Contemporary and other classes.
Steps on Broadway is another awesome studio with higher level ballet classes and some pretty good jazz.

LOVE NYC

summer camps are over

SDA Summer camps are now over!! We have had 3 Two Week Intensive sessions, 3 Babes on Broadway sessions, and 1 week of a Hip Hop/Film Acting camp. It has been a long and fun-filled summer. The weather has not been the brightest, but rain or shine, the world of dance still goes on.

To the dedicated and extremely fun dancers who spent the summer at SDA, we would like to thank you for being so committed and enthusiastic. All of our dancers improved a great deal with the wonderful instruction of Helena Sullivan, Sarah Tallman, Maria Sullivan, Millie Heckler, Angela Whitehill, Stephanie Greenwald and Richard Waterhouse.

Thank you...dancers, teachers and parents for another great summer.

Master classes will be held at SDA during the week of August 24th. Information regarding the master classes can be found by clicking on Schedule, or by contacting

Millie Heckler’s last Hip Hop Class for a while :(

Millie Heckler is off to Europe to explore, learn and love life. Her last hip hop class at SDA (for the Summer at least) will be held TONIGHT (wed) at 7:15 pm.

Millie is a great teacher, friend and student. We will miss her greatly, but we know she will always be back! Good luck Millie!!!
